Since 2021, the African German Health Association e. V. has been working together with the Special Initiative „Decent work for a just transition“ on a broad-based project in the Republic of Senegal. The aim is to jointly contribute to the promotion of the physical and digital infrastructure of the health sector of the West African state:
WHO saw the digitalisation of health care based on global standards as an opportunity for African countries to provide effective health care in all settings. Integral sub-components within the project were the establishment of an IHE training system, the training of local IT experts & system administrators and key users, and the exchange with international IT/IHE experts. During the programme, participants from three hospitals and three to five SMEs were trained. The explicit objective was a national implementation that went hand in hand with an improvement in health care and the creation of jobs.
In order to meet today’s demands on the health sector, it was of great importance to train more people in digital skills related to the many health activities and thus job creation. The Health Cloud & Data Accelerator programme trained 110 participants in three groups. It was important to train more people in digital skills related to the numerous health activities and the creation of employment. As part of the initiative, with the health cloud and the data accelerator, 110 participants were trained in three groups.
Hospital planning and design laid the foundation for the efficiency and sustainability of any hospital construction. During intensive workshops and seminars, participants were taught expertise from the various phases, e.g. RIBA, design, architecture, medical technology planning, etc. Participants learned to apply the acquired knowledge in a case study on the development of a maternity hospital.
This sub-project developed a training course tailored to the local needs of Senegal for hospital staff responsible for the provision and functioning of medical and non-medical equipment. The course included modules on management and maintenance of equipment. The aim was to qualify at least 60 participants.
We developed a tailor-made curriculum for the management level in hospitals with local stakeholders, and conducted the first trainings with 140 participants from all over Senegal in the course of the project.
The Institut Pasteur de Dakar – the leading laboratory in Senegal – was planning a significant specialization in vaccines, including the vaccine against the Covid-19 virus. As part of the initiative, we trained more than 30 participants in supply chain management and scientific English.
Under Invest for Jobs, the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) has bundled a range of offers to support companies in their employment-generating engagement in Africa. The Special Initiative „Decent work for a just transition“ – as it is officially titled – offers advice, contacts and financial support to remove barriers to investment. The aim is to work with companies to create good jobs and training places in currently eight partner countries. The Special Initiative is implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, among others.
