Germany supports Ghana’s endeavour to become a pan-African centre for vaccine manufacturing. In line with this, the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) has commissioned the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH to implement the project “Support to Vaccine Manufacturing in Ghana”. Over a period of three years (2021-2024) and with the help of a BMZ grant of 5 million euros, the vaccine project aims to help create an enabling environment for local vaccine production in Ghana and support the efforts of national governments and development partners in the fight against COVID-19. Specifically, the Vaccine Project supports Ghana’s Presidential Vaccine Manufacturing Committee in implementing its 10-year plan to make Ghana a centre for vaccine manufacturing in the sub-region.
Under the Team Europe brand, German development cooperation and the European Union have also initiated support of 2.8 million euros for the institutional and technical strengthening of the Ghana Food and Drug Authority to enable it to regulate vaccine production. With additional special funding of €2 million, the immunisation team supported the national COVID-19 vaccination campaign in Ghana. Implementing partners were the Ghana Health Service, the African German Health Association, the Clinton Health Initiative and World Vision. Find out more about our contribution here:
The aim of the national campaign was to increase the acceptance of Covid-19 vaccination among clinical and non-clinical hospital staff. All materials were produced in close collaboration with local stakeholders in workshops. The campaign was conducted on-site at health facilities and included distribution of educational materials, in-kind donations to the hospital, and a Covid-19 video with quiz and raffle. The on-site activities were linked with online elements to achieve a sustainable result.
This working package was designed to promote knowledge exchange and capacity building in the field of digital tracking of vaccines. To this end, experts from Germany met with local experts from Ghana in workshops to share their experiences on both sides. The teaching materials focused on the different Covid 19 vaccines available in Ghana. The hybrid programme linked on-site content with interactive online content.
The intention of this work package was to promote knowledge exchange and capacity building in the field of vaccine supply chain management. The focus was on cold chain logistics: local specialists from Ghana met experts from Germany in workshops to exchange their experiences on both sides. The programme combined on-site content with mentoring sessions and interactive online content.
Health facilities face challenges in the management of medical waste. Within the project framework, local and international experts jointly designed a training programme for medical waste management specifically tailored to Ghana, which was then successfully implemented in several hospitals.
Infection prevention and control is a major issue in health facilities around the world, which has become even more important due to the coronal pandemic. In collaboration with experts from Ghana and Germany, a special programme was developed that includes the challenges and implementation options for optimal infection prevention and control in vaccination centres. The programme was subsequently implemented at national level in vaccination centres.
