International Expertise for the Curriculum of the Biomanufacturing Training Centre

The Biomanufacturing Training Centre in Accra, Ghana, is equipping students with the skills needed to excel in various fields within the pharmaceutical sector, including essential pharmaceutical production. AGHA has been invited to support this ambitious project with internationally recognized curriculum content. AGHA and its members are proud to contribute to the training program at the Biomanufacturing Training Centre by offering courses on “Hazardous Substances,” “Health and Safety,” and “Cold Chain (Logistics) Management.” We are grateful for the support of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, which has made this project possible.

The project focuses on the following courses:

1. Hazardous Substances

In the complex field of biomanufacturing, the Hazardous Substances course is a key component of the training program. Safety is paramount—understanding and properly handling hazardous substances are essential skills for biomanufacturing professionals. Beyond the lab, these professionals are responsible for the well-being of others. With a focus on vaccines and their journey through the supply chain, the course addresses the unique challenges associated with these critical substances. Participants learn best practices for handling, storing, and transporting hazardous materials safely and effectively.

2. Health and Safety

The Health and Safety course is a fundamental component, covering essential aspects to ensure a secure and healthy work environment. This training addresses a range of critical topics, beginning with an introduction to workplace safety, establishing the foundation for a culture of safety awareness. Among other sessions, the module on electrical safety provides guidelines to mitigate risks associated with electrical equipment. Health and hygiene practices are also emphasized, promoting a clean and safe environment for all.

3. Cold Chain (Logistics) Management

In this course, participants are introduced to the fundamentals of Cold Chain (Logistics) Management. The curriculum covers the basics of supply chain management, the logistical considerations specific to vaccines, the role of cold chain processes within supply chain management, and the operational implications of vaccine distribution across different domains.

Innovative Learning Approach:

All courses were designed with a hybrid approach:

1. Participants began with on-site training sessions at the Biomanufacturing Training Centre. After each class, the instructor was available to address questions and facilitate additional discussions.

2. Once the on-site sessions were completed, participants gained access to an online learning platform, where they could deepen their understanding and review the content at their own pace.

3. Multiple mentoring sessions were offered, allowing participants to discuss any remaining questions and receive additional information.

4. All participants were encouraged to connect with the association and instructors on LinkedIn. We are pleased to maintain ongoing contact with participants, supporting their career development to this day.
