Physical infrastructure

Initially, several health facilities in Ghana were visited and analysed in detail with regard to their physical and digital condition. On this basis, the experience gained was evaluated in workshops together with local and international stakeholders. Subsequently, coordinated training and seminars were offered to improve hospital planning (RIBA, design, architecture, medical technology planning, etc.). The aim of this work package was to develop a hospital prototype for Ghana with the support of local and international experts.

2. E-Health infrastructure

According to the WHO, the digitisation of health care is a great opportunity for effective care worldwide. Consequently, the project included workshops with Ghanaian and German stakeholders to assess Ghana’s e-health infrastructure. In addition, a roundtable with Ghanaian, Senegalese and German experts was held on the topic of international implementation: The focus was on IHE-based infrastructure and standardised electronic communication in healthcare, including digital medical documentation. A continuous review of the IHE infrastructure and future workshops are part of the project.

3. Software application for the health sector

Digital health care not only improves access to health care for many people in Ghana, but also provides excellent employment opportunities for local IT talent. Within the project, various components were integral. These included the promotion of Ghanaian-German cooperation in the application of ICT software in health facilities and the analysis of the current state of integrated software solutions in selected hospitals. Workshops and discussions were organised to discuss the application of ICT software in public and private health facilities. Furthermore, joint projects between Ghana and Germany were developed for the future development of ICT software applications.

4. Qualification of management staff in hospitals

Sound education and training is a prerequisite for effective health care. Therefore, one focus of this project was on the following aspects: Workshops and seminars were organised on bottlenecks in administration and possibilities for improvement, including the identification of key stakeholders. Another important topic was the promotion of German-Ghanaian cooperation in the development of training concepts as well as the joint development of a training concept for health administration. In addition, pilot trainings were conducted with selected administrative leaders in order to establish a permanent cooperation.

5.
