In line with this, the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) has commissioned the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH to implement the project “Support to Vaccine Manufacturing in Ghana”. Over a period of three years (2021-2024) and with the help of a BMZ grant of 5 million euros, the vaccine project aims to help create an enabling environment for local vaccine production in Ghana and support the efforts of national governments and development partners in the fight against COVID-19. Specifically, the Vaccine Project supports Ghana’s Presidential Vaccine Manufacturing Committee in implementing its 10-year plan to make Ghana a centre for vaccine manufacturing in the sub-region.

Under the Team Europe brand, German development cooperation and the European Union have also initiated support of 2.8 million euros for the institutional and technical strengthening of the Ghana Food and Drug Authority to enable it to regulate vaccine production. With additional special funding of €2 million, the immunisation team supported the national COVID-19 vaccination campaign in Ghana. Implementing partners were the Ghana Health Service, the African German Health Association, the Clinton Health Initiative and World Vision. All materials were produced in close collaboration with local stakeholders in workshops. The campaign was conducted on-site at health facilities and included distribution of educational materials, in-kind donations to the hospital, and a Covid-19 video with quiz and raffle.
